Audible sucks, here's why.

Audible, an audiobook service provided by Amazon, had a free trial offer, so I took the offer. I was actually tempted, at first, to continue membership just to get the digital audiobooks. However, I found way too many things wrong with it.

  1. The audiobooks are DRM'd and cannot be simply played in any media player.
  2. Audio format said I would get a MP3-formatted file, but the file is not even named with that extension.
  3. The monthly fee is $8 for just one audiobook; not 2 books like the trial offer implies.
  4. The cancellation process is not straightforward.
  5. Downloading the books requires Audible's very slow and bulky download manager.
  6. Did I mention the downloads are slow? Well, they are.
  7. The books available are actually not as good of a selection as I expected, and I didn't expect much. I couldn't find a single how-to book on computer programming. I also couldn't find any Halo novels, but I can't find those as audiobooks anywhere.

That said, after cancelling membership, I got to keep free copies of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Wizard's First Rule" on my Sansa Fuze. Tongue
